As an architect Gerard has a wide range of experience including hotels, education and health buildings, retail, mixed use commercial and residential projects, large scale housing developments and refurbishments, as well as high-specification one-off houses and office fit-outs.  He has completed projects in a wide range of locations, from infill sites in historic city centres to remote rural and coastal locations, and has been appointed by public, private, charitable and institutional employers.  He has worked on Listed Buildings and in Conservation Areas, and has run projects under management contracts, construction management forms and bespoke partnering arrangements, as well as under more common standard forms.

As an Expert Witness Gerard has wide architectural experience, specialising in investigation of the causes of building defects and in the analysis and review of the performance of architects, contractors and specialist subcontractors.

Since 2009 he has been instructed regularly as a party appointed expert witness, on behalf of insurers, employers, architects, contractors and subcontractors, in more than 200 construction disputes, ranging in value from £20,000 to £130M.  These disputes most commonly relate to allegations of breach of contract on the part of the contractor and/or claims of professional negligence against architects.  He has also been instructed several times as a single joint expert.
